This is a worthwhile resource for every Christian because it equips them to “make sense” of the Bible’s multiple, varied parts. The Bible is focused on one Person (Christ) yet sometimes when reading particular books, it can become confusing as to how small pieces fit into the entire drama of redemption. This is where this book provides the most value: it shows you how each of the Bible’s books fits into the larger story. So, if you’ve ever read the Bible and wondered, “What’s the point of this?” or “How is this relevant?” then I think you will benefit much from this book. And by no means does this book-by-book Bible tour require any special knowledge or to be an “expert.” It does entail just being a regular person so that you can learn some general principles. Each chapter follows the same format: (I) "Orienting Data" that describes the content, historical context and the emphasis of the book (II) An overview of the entire book that talks about big themes and provides specific advice for reading (III) A “Walk Through” that provides chapter-by-chapter guidance on explaining what the text means and how it fits in with the author’s intent (IV) A conclusion that ties the book’s message into the whole cannon of Scripture. The final thing that I will say is that (obviously) you don’t want to read a book on how to read the Bible and not read the actual Bible! Consequently, this is a great resource to use when you (or your church) are doing a Bible reading plan or reading through the whole Bible together. The Bible’s worth is infinite, and this text will help to open your eyes to see the coherent sweetness, splendor and the excellence of the Word of God. This also makes a worthwhile companion to the other book written by the same authors, How to Read the Bible for All its Worth.
